RHEV-M going Open Source

I recently came across an interesting blog post about RHEV-M going open source. I don’t know how I missed this one but I haven’t seen much about this in the blogosphere or from Red Hat. In case you don't know, RHEV-M is Red Hat's Enterprise Virtualization Manager product for managing virtual machines primarily within a data center. The writer is a developer from Israel called Livnat Peer so I’m assuming that he was one of the original qumranet developers before being acquired by Red Hat. The original post can be found here. Another Red Hat developer, Mark McLoughlin, also referred to this blog post in his personal blog here so it does look legit.

In Livnat’s post he talks about the process of porting RHEV-M from C# to Java and the challenges in coming up with a strategy for porting the application. It’s an interesting read but more importantly it’ll be interesting to see what kind of impact this has on the KVM market. KVM is a great product but lacks a really professional management application that’s widely available. Red Hat has always proven themselves to be a good open source citizen and I have no doubt that they will deliver a great product. I’m looking forward to see how this turns out and hope that this helps with the adoption of KVM to a wider community. Some users are cringing about the fact that java was the chosen language but let’s wait and see. Please feel free to post your comments.

I was under the impression

I was under the impression that you worked for Red Hat or came from Qumranet.

Who do you work for? =)

Re: I was under the impression

It's understandable to think that given my blog topic but I actually just work for myself right now. I do some systems/network administration consulting work.

Cool! It is very good to know

Cool!

It is very good to know someone that consults in KVM.

One never know when that could come in handy =)

It is actually just now I notice you also have a forum. I think I will go check it out =)

As a lighter weight alternative, you could consider Ganeti

Recently we've had quite a spike of people running KVM under Ganeti, Google's Open Source virtualization cluster manager. http://code.google.com/p/ganeti . It's written in python, and doesn't have any graphic interface, but can be controlled via command line or a RESTful http API. Oh, and contributions are welcome.

(disclaimer: I'm one of the developers)

I like that RHEV-M is going

I like that RHEV-M is going open source. I think that an open source option that manages virtual machines primarily within a data center is brilliant. Will it be an ediscovery platform?I'm excited to see how this new Red Hat product turns out. I agree with you. It will be interesting to see if it helps with the adoption of KVM to a larger community base.
